Beschreibung
A 1940 oil painting by Italian artist Carlo Carrà, depicting a simplified, classical interpretation of Venus rising from the sea.
Venere anadiomene II, painted by Carlo Carrà in 1940, represents a shift in the artist's career away from his earlier involvement with Futurism and Metaphysical art. During this period, Carrà moved towards a more classical, simplified approach to the human form. The painting depicts the mythological figure of Venus rising from the sea, a subject with a long history in European art. Carrà treats the figure with a sense of solidity and volume, moving away from the fragmented perspectives of his youth.
The composition is balanced, with the central figure of Venus standing against a backdrop of turbulent, abstracted waves. The brushwork is visible and expressive, creating a textured surface that gives the work a tactile quality. The palette is muted, relying on soft flesh tones for the figure and cooler, darker blues and greys for the surrounding environment. This choice of colour helps to isolate the figure, drawing the eye to the gentle curve of her posture and the deliberate placement of her arms.
Carrà was a central figure in the Italian Novecento movement, which sought to return to order and tradition in the wake of the First World War. This work reflects that desire for stability and a connection to the masters of the past, such as Botticelli or Titian, while maintaining a distinctly twentieth-century sensibility. The figure is not rendered with academic precision, but rather with a focus on mass and weight. The surrounding sea is suggested through broad, gestural strokes rather than realistic detail, allowing the viewer to focus on the physical presence of the subject. This piece provides a clear example of Carrà's later style, where he synthesised his experimental background with a renewed interest in the human figure and traditional themes.
