A 1888 still life by Vincent van Gogh, featuring a pitcher of flowers, a coffeepot, and fruit arranged on a table.
Painted in 1888, this still life composition captures a domestic arrangement during the artist's period in Arles. The work features a central white pitcher filled with yellow flowers, positioned alongside a dark, cylindrical coffeepot and a blue-and-white patterned plate. Several pieces of fruit are scattered across the foreground, providing a sense of scale and texture to the tabletop surface.
The application of paint is characteristic of the artist's approach during this time, utilising short, directional brushstrokes to build form and suggest movement within the objects. The background is rendered with a light, neutral tone, which allows the darker elements of the coffeepot and the saturated hues of the fruit to emerge. The composition relies on the interplay between the rounded forms of the pitcher and fruit and the verticality of the coffeepot, creating a balanced arrangement that avoids excessive clutter.
Van Gogh often returned to the genre of still life to experiment with colour theory and brushwork techniques. In this piece, the contrast between the cool blue tones of the plate and the warm yellows of the flowers demonstrates his interest in complementary colour relationships. The objects are depicted with a focus on their physical presence rather than precise anatomical accuracy, reflecting his move away from traditional representation toward a more expressive application of paint. The surface of the table is treated with a similar textural quality to the objects, unifying the scene through a consistent handling of the medium. This work provides an insight into the artist's daily environment and his methodical approach to constructing a scene from ordinary household items.
