Beschreibung
A rare, symbolic self-portrait by Leon Bakst, featuring a stone urn as a surrogate for the artist within a moody, park-like setting.
Leon Bakst, primarily known for his work with the Ballets Russes, produced this unusual self-portrait in 1906. The composition centres on a large, classical stone urn overflowing with dark, cascading foliage and grapes. This central object acts as a surrogate for the artist, a common device in Symbolist painting where the subject is obscured or represented through allegory rather than direct depiction.
The background reveals a park setting, rendered with a flattened perspective that emphasises the decorative quality of the scene. To the left, a small figure in dark clothing sits, while a figure in a pink dress appears to the right. These figures are painted with loose, gestural brushwork, contrasting with the more defined, sculptural form of the central vase. The palette relies on deep browns, blacks, and muted ochres, punctuated by the pale, ghostly tone of the stone urn.
Bakst uses the urn as a vessel for his own identity, suggesting a sense of melancholy or detachment. The dark, drooping vegetation creates a heavy, somber mood, typical of the period's interest in psychological depth and subjective experience. The work avoids traditional portraiture conventions, opting instead for a staged, theatrical arrangement that reflects the artist's background in stage design. The interplay between the static, solid urn and the fleeting, sketch-like figures in the background creates a tension between permanence and transience. This piece offers a glimpse into the private, introspective side of an artist who spent much of his career creating public spectacles for the stage.
