Beschreibung
A geometric study by Josef Albers, exploring the interaction of colour and space through the architectural forms of the Variant/Adobe series.
Josef Albers began his Variant/Adobe series following his initial travels to Mexico in the late 1940s. This work reflects his fascination with the architectural forms of pre-Columbian sites, specifically the adobe structures he encountered. Rather than documenting these buildings in a literal sense, Albers distilled their essence into a series of geometric arrangements that explore the interaction of colour and spatial perception.
The composition relies on a series of nested, rectangular forms that suggest a facade or an entry point. Albers uses a palette of deep magenta, warm orange, and soft pink to create a sense of depth and light. The application of paint is precise, with the edges of each colour field meeting with exactitude. This technique removes the presence of the artist's hand, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the optical effects produced by the adjacent hues.
Albers was a teacher at the Bauhaus and later at Black Mountain College, where he developed his theories on colour interaction. In this work, the colours do not merely sit side by side; they influence one another. The orange rectangle appears to advance, while the darker magenta borders recede, creating a push-and-pull effect that is characteristic of his mature style. The work is a study in how simple, repeated shapes can generate complex visual experiences. By limiting his vocabulary to basic geometric forms, Albers invites the viewer to observe how light and colour change our understanding of space. This print captures the texture and chromatic precision of the original masonite panel, offering a clear view into the systematic approach Albers applied to his investigation of visual phenomena.

Artist Biography
Josef Albers
He was born in 1888 in Bottrop, Westphalia, into a Roman Catholic craftsman's family. He worked as a schoolteacher for five years before deciding to study art, joining the Bauhaus as a student in 1920 and becoming a faculty member by 1922. He married Anni Fleischmann, a Bauhaus textile student, in 1925.
At Black Mountain, his students included Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, Ruth Asawa, and Ray Johnson. He left in 1950 to head the Department of Design at Yale, where he taught until retirement in 1958. The teaching produced Interaction of Color (1963), a text arguing that colour can only be understood in context, never in isolation. It remains a standard reference.
The Homage to the Square series occupied the rest of his life: nested squares of colour, painted obsessively, with every pigment and proportion meticulously recorded. The paintings look simple. The colour relationships within them are not. He died in 1976.
