A detailed Dutch etching depicting a father feeding his child in a modest, rustic interior, capturing a quiet moment of daily life.
This etching by Jacob Laurensz. van der Vinne captures a domestic scene within a modest Dutch interior. The composition focuses on a father seated in a simple chair, carefully feeding a small child held on his lap. Behind them, a woman stands near a hearth, observing the interaction. To the right, another child sits on a low stool, occupied with their own meal. The setting is sparse, featuring a bed tucked into an alcove, a cooking pot suspended over the fire, and various household items scattered about, which provide a sense of daily life in the early eighteenth century.
Van der Vinne employs a dense network of etched lines to define the textures of the room, from the rough fabric of the clothing to the wooden surfaces of the furniture. The light source appears to originate from the left, casting shadows that add depth to the figures and the cramped living space. The inclusion of an inscription at the bottom of the print, 'Het Soete Kintje eet, Je Luertjes fijne Reet', adds a layer of narrative context typical of the period, where genre prints often carried moralising or humorous captions.
As a member of the Haarlem-based family of artists, Van der Vinne continued the tradition of depicting everyday life that was popularised by earlier Dutch masters. This work demonstrates an interest in the quiet, unpretentious moments of family life, rendered with a focus on character and atmosphere. The print offers a glimpse into the social conditions of the time, documenting the humble surroundings and simple routines of a working-class household. The artist's technical approach relies on varied line weights to create contrast and volume, ensuring that the figures remain the primary focus despite the cluttered environment.
