Beschreibung
A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, featuring a unique perspective of the Takanawa waterfront framed by an ox-cart wheel.
Ushimachi in Takanawa is a print from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige between 1856 and 1858. This specific work, numbered 81 in the series, demonstrates the artist's interest in unconventional perspectives. By placing a large ox-cart wheel in the immediate foreground, Hiroshige frames the view of the bay, creating a sense of depth that draws the eye toward the distant horizon.
The composition captures a quiet moment at the Takanawa waterfront. A small dog rests near the cart, while discarded watermelon rinds lie on the ground, suggesting a summer afternoon. In the background, numerous boats sail across the water under a sky marked by a faint rainbow. The colour palette transitions from the deep blues of the sea to a soft, pale sky, reflecting the atmospheric conditions of the Edo period.
Hiroshige was a master of the woodblock medium, and this print shows his ability to balance everyday life with the natural environment. The use of the cart wheel as a framing device is a characteristic technique of the artist, forcing the viewer to look through a specific lens at the wider scene. The print is a fine example of the late Ukiyo-e style, where the focus shifted towards capturing the specific character of locations around the capital city. The precision of the lines and the subtle gradations of colour demonstrate the technical skill involved in the production of these prints. This work remains a clear representation of the aesthetic values of the mid-nineteenth century in Japan, providing a view of the coastal areas of Edo before the rapid modernisation that followed.
