This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the coastal town of Uraga in Sagami Province, a significant maritime location during the Edo period. It belongs to the series Harbors of Japan (Nihon minato zukushi), which documents various ports across the country. The composition employs a framing device, using a snow-covered cliff in the foreground to guide the viewer's eye toward the harbour below.
Hiroshige captures the quiet atmosphere of a winter day. The sky and water are rendered in shades of blue, punctuated by the white flecks of falling snow. Several traditional Japanese sailing vessels are moored at the stone-walled docks, their masts creating vertical lines that contrast with the horizontal expanse of the bay. The small houses of the village, also blanketed in snow, are arranged along the shoreline, demonstrating the artist's skill in balancing architectural elements with the natural environment.
The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Ukiyo-e tradition. The use of bokashi, or colour gradation, is evident in the sky, where the tone shifts from a darker hue at the top to a lighter shade near the horizon.
