A Coptic textile fragment from the 4th-6th century featuring symmetrical peacocks and a central wreath, rendered in a graphic, monochromatic style.
This textile fragment originates from the Coptic period in Egypt, a time when linen and wool weaving reached a high degree of technical proficiency. The piece features a symmetrical arrangement of two peacocks flanking a central wreath, which contains a cross. Below this primary motif, a series of interconnected circular forms creates a rhythmic, geometric structure across the fabric surface. The imagery reflects the syncretism of the era, blending classical decorative motifs with early Christian symbolism.
The composition is balanced and formal, typical of Coptic weaving techniques where dyed wool threads were inserted into a linen ground to create patterns. The peacocks, often associated with immortality and the afterlife in both pagan and Christian iconography, are rendered with a focus on silhouette and pattern rather than anatomical realism. The circular elements at the base suggest a continuous border or decorative band, common in garments or hangings of the period.
As a museum-grade print, this reproduction captures the texture of the aged linen and the faded, monochromatic quality of the original weave. The visual weight of the dark wool against the lighter linen ground provides a clear, graphic quality that remains effective in contemporary interiors. This fragment offers a glimpse into the material culture of late antiquity, where everyday objects were frequently adorned with symbolic imagery. The preservation of such textiles is rare, as the organic fibres are susceptible to decay over centuries. This print allows for the study of the design and the historical context of Coptic textile production without the fragility of the original artefact.
