A Coptic textile fragment from Egypt, featuring a band of animal medallions woven in wool on a linen ground.
This textile fragment originates from the Coptic period in Egypt, a time when local weaving traditions merged with Hellenistic and Sassanian influences. The piece features a horizontal band of circular medallions, each containing a stylised animal figure. These motifs are characteristic of the decorative vocabulary found in late antique textiles, where zoomorphic imagery was frequently adapted into geometric or repeating patterns.
The weave structure, combining linen for the ground and wool for the decorative elements, demonstrates the technical proficiency of weavers working in the Nile valley. The dark, contrasting wool creates a clear silhouette against the lighter linen background. The border consists of a repeating wave or scroll pattern, which frames the central row of medallions. Such fragments were often used as decorative inserts on tunics or other garments, serving both a functional and an aesthetic purpose.
Over the centuries, the linen has acquired a weathered texture, showing signs of wear and fraying at the edges. This degradation provides a sense of the object's age and its history as a utilitarian item. The composition relies on symmetry and repetition, typical of the period's approach to textile ornamentation. By isolating this band, the viewer can observe the precision required to execute these small-scale figures within a limited space. The work offers a glimpse into the material culture of early medieval Egypt, where everyday clothing was often embellished with symbolic or decorative motifs. This print captures the monochromatic quality of the original, preserving the contrast between the dark wool and the aged linen ground.
