A 15th-century textile fragment featuring a geometric diamond lattice and stylised floral motifs, woven in silk and metal thread.
This textile fragment, dating to the 15th century, displays the technical sophistication of late medieval weaving. The composition relies on a repeating diamond lattice, a common structural device in European luxury fabrics of the period. Within each lozenge, a stylised floral motif appears, executed with metallic threads that would have caught the light, creating a sense of opulence typical of ecclesiastical or aristocratic vestments.
The design demonstrates a high degree of geometric precision. The intersections of the lattice are marked by circular motifs, which serve to anchor the repeating pattern and provide visual rhythm across the surface of the cloth. The use of metal thread, likely silver or silver-gilt, indicates that this piece was intended for high-status use, where the display of precious materials was as important as the woven design itself.
Despite the wear and fraying at the edges, the fragment retains the clarity of its original construction. The monochromatic nature of the surviving material allows for a focus on the structural integrity of the weave and the balance between the linear framework and the organic floral elements. Such textiles were often produced in major European centres of production, such as Lucca or Venice, where the trade in silk and gold thread was highly organised. This piece provides a glimpse into the material culture of the late medieval period, where decorative arts were integrated into the daily lives of the elite through clothing, wall hangings, and liturgical objects. The preservation of this fragment allows for an analysis of the weaving techniques that defined the aesthetic of the era, prioritising symmetry and the repetition of motifs to create a sense of order and luxury.
