A study of a Coptic textile fragment, featuring a classic almond-shaped motif rendered in wool and linen from late antique Egypt.
This textile fragment originates from the Coptic period in Egypt, a time when the production of woven goods reached a high level of technical proficiency. The piece features a distinct almond-shaped form, often referred to as a mandorla or vesica piscis, which was a common motif in early Christian and late antique decorative arts. The construction utilises a combination of wool and linen, materials standard for the region during this era. The dark, dense weave of the central shape contrasts with the lighter, coarser ground fabric, suggesting it was once part of a larger garment or decorative hanging.
The edges of the fragment show signs of wear and fraying, typical of archaeological textiles that have survived for over a millennium. The stitching along the perimeter indicates that this element was likely an appliqué, attached to a base cloth to provide ornamentation. The simplicity of the form, combined with the monochromatic palette, reflects the aesthetic priorities of the period, where symbolic geometry often took precedence over representational imagery.
Such fragments provide insight into the daily life and material culture of late antique Egypt. They demonstrate the skill of weavers who worked with limited tools to create durable and meaningful objects. This print captures the texture of the original fibres, allowing for an examination of the weave structure and the physical history of the object. It is a study in minimalist design, where the shape itself carries the primary visual weight. The presence of an accession number on the original indicates its status as a documented historical artefact, preserved for its contribution to our understanding of ancient textile production techniques.
