A geometric, conceptual interpretation of the Netherlands, rendered in ink on blue graph paper.
This work by Dutch artist Reinjan Mulder presents a geometric reduction of the Netherlands. Executed on standard blue-grid graph paper, the piece strips away geographical detail in favour of a rigid, pixelated interpretation of national borders. The outline of the country is defined by a series of orthogonal steps, forcing the organic shape of the coastline and land boundaries into a strict mathematical framework.
Mulder employs a secondary layer of diagonal lines that intersect the grid, creating a diamond pattern across the surface. Within this structure, specific squares are marked with an 'x', suggesting a systematic approach to mapping or data collection. The use of translucent tracing or graph paper provides a clinical, technical aesthetic, reminiscent of architectural drafting or cartographic planning. By removing the familiar markers of topography, the artist invites the viewer to consider the country as a construct of lines and coordinates rather than a physical territory.
This piece fits within the broader tradition of conceptual art, where the process and the underlying logic of the work take precedence over traditional representation. The visual language is sparse and deliberate, relying on the contrast between the soft blue of the grid and the stark black ink of the outline. It functions as a study in simplification, reducing a complex national identity to a series of repeatable, measurable units. The presence of the number '875' in the corner and the 'VANG' stamp suggests this may have been part of a larger series or a specific archival project. The work is an exercise in order, imposing a man-made system onto the natural form of the land.
