This piece features a central square of fine linen, framed by a wide border of needle lace. The lace work displays a repeating pattern of scrolling vines, leaves, and small blossoms. The technique relies on the contrast between the solid, opaque linen centre and the open, airy structure of the needle-made border. The lace border is constructed using a series of buttonhole stitches, which create the firm, raised edges characteristic of high-quality needle lace.
Needle lace, or punto in aria, emerged in Italy during the sixteenth century. It represents a shift from earlier forms of cutwork, as it is constructed entirely with a needle and thread rather than being worked over a woven fabric base. The design here follows a symmetrical, scrolling arrangement that reflects the influence of botanical motifs common in European textile production during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
