A fine art print of an eighteenth-century porcelain dish, featuring delicate, hand-painted floral motifs in the Rococo style.
This print captures a piece of eighteenth-century European porcelain, characterised by the delicate application of enamel pigments onto a white glazed surface. The dish features a series of scattered floral motifs, a decorative style often referred to as 'Deutsche Blumen' or German flowers, which gained popularity across European manufactories during the mid-1700s. These botanical arrangements were frequently inspired by contemporary botanical illustrations, prioritising a naturalistic yet stylised representation of flora.
The composition is defined by its asymmetry, a hallmark of the Rococo period. Rather than a central, balanced arrangement, the flowers are dispersed across the rim and the well of the dish. This creates a sense of movement and lightness, typical of the period's preference for organic forms and decorative grace. The palette consists of soft purples, oranges, and greens, applied with a fine brush to suggest the texture of petals and leaves. A small, solitary insect or sprig is placed near the edge, a common detail in porcelain painting of this era to fill negative space and add a touch of whimsy.
Porcelain of this type was produced for domestic display and use among the European aristocracy and merchant classes. The white ground serves to emphasise the clarity of the painted details, allowing the colours to appear clear and distinct. This print offers a study of the craftsmanship involved in ceramic decoration, where the artist had to account for the curvature of the object while maintaining the integrity of the design. The work reflects the broader European fascination with botanical study and the refinement of domestic objects during the Enlightenment.
