A delicate botanical study of a carrot by the Japanese Shijō school artist Nishiyama Hōen, featuring soft brushwork and a minimalist composition.
This delicate study of a carrot originates from a collection of twenty-five watercolour paintings by the Japanese artist Nishiyama Hōen. Hōen was a prominent figure within the Shijō school, a movement based in Kyoto that prioritised direct observation of nature alongside a refined, painterly technique. Unlike the more rigid styles of the Kano school, the Shijō approach favoured a softer, more spontaneous application of ink and pigment.
The composition is sparse, placing the vegetable against a vast, unadorned background. This choice directs the viewer to the specific textures of the subject, from the fibrous root to the feathery, light-green foliage. The artist employs a subtle colour palette, using muted orange tones for the root and varied shades of green for the leaves. The brushwork is precise yet fluid, capturing the organic form of the carrot with minimal strokes. Such studies were often produced as part of an album, intended for private contemplation or as reference material for larger compositions.
Nishiyama Hōen studied under Okamoto Toyohiko, a master of the Shijō style, and his work reflects the technical rigour and aesthetic sensitivity associated with that lineage. The paper shows signs of age, with a warm, aged tone that complements the naturalistic subject matter. This print captures the quiet observation characteristic of nineteenth-century Japanese botanical art. It is an example of the artist's ability to elevate a humble, everyday object into a subject of aesthetic interest through careful observation and restraint.
