A detailed reproduction of a medieval Persian glazed ceramic tile panel, featuring raised calligraphic script and stylized avian motifs in cobalt and turquoise.
This piece represents a tradition of architectural decoration found in the Ilkhanid period of Persia. The panel features a combination of relief-moulded calligraphy and painted surface decoration. The central section is dominated by large, raised Arabic script, which is finished with traces of gilding against a deep cobalt blue glaze. The background of this central field is filled with delicate, painted floral scrolls, providing a contrast to the bold, sculptural nature of the primary text.
The upper register of the panel depicts stylized avian forms, likely representing birds of paradise or phoenix-like creatures, rendered in a lighter turquoise and white palette. These figures are integrated into a fluid, wave-like pattern, which suggests movement and ethereal space. The use of cobalt blue, often derived from cobalt oxide, was a hallmark of high-quality ceramic production during this era, requiring precise control over kiln temperatures to achieve the desired depth of colour.
Such panels were typically produced for the interior walls of mosques, shrines, or palaces. They functioned as both structural elements and vehicles for religious or poetic inscriptions. The relief technique, known as 'lajvardina' or similar lustre-related processes, allowed for a multi-layered visual experience. The play of light across the raised surfaces of the letters creates shadows that shift depending on the angle of illumination, giving the static text a sense of physical presence. This print captures the weathered texture of the original ceramic, including the craquelure and minor losses to the glaze that have occurred over centuries of exposure. The composition balances the rigid, formal structure of the script with the organic, flowing lines of the avian motifs, reflecting the aesthetic priorities of medieval Persian ceramicists.
