A detailed 1879 wood engraving by Auguste Lepère depicting a wedding party posing in a professional photography studio.
This wood engraving by Auguste Lepère, published in the French periodical Le Monde Illustré in 1879, captures a scene of nineteenth-century social life. The composition is based on a painting by Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret, which was exhibited at the Paris Salon of the same year. Lepère, a master of the wood engraving technique, translates the painterly qualities of the original work into a monochromatic medium, utilising fine lines to define the textures of the studio environment and the formal attire of the wedding party.
The scene depicts a professional photography studio, a space that was becoming increasingly common for the middle classes during this period. A photographer is positioned behind a large-format camera, his body obscured by a dark cloth as he prepares to capture the image of the bride and groom. The couple stands stiffly on a small platform, their posture reflecting the technical requirements of early photography, which necessitated long exposure times and absolute stillness. To the right, a man sits in a chair, smoking, while a small child observes the proceedings. The studio itself is functional, with a glass roof to maximise natural light, a necessity for the photographic processes of the time.
Lepère provides a detailed account of the studio atmosphere, from the arrangement of the furniture to the subtle interactions between the subjects. The inclusion of text below the image, typical of nineteenth-century illustrated journals, adds a narrative layer to the visual record. This print offers a glimpse into the intersection of art, technology, and social ritual in late nineteenth-century France. It documents the transition of photography from a scientific curiosity to a standard component of significant life events, while also demonstrating the technical precision of Lepère as an engraver.
