A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, featuring a towering wave framing the distant Mount Fuji.
Under the Wave off Kanagawa is the most recognised work from the series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. Produced by Katsushika Hokusai during the Edo period, this woodblock print captures a moment of tension between the power of the ocean and the stillness of the mountain. The composition relies on a dynamic, asymmetrical arrangement where a massive, claw-like wave dominates the foreground. This wave frames the smaller, distant form of Mount Fuji, which appears calm and immutable in comparison to the turbulent water.
Hokusai utilised Prussian blue, a synthetic pigment imported from Europe, to achieve the deep, saturated tones of the sea. The print demonstrates a mastery of line and form, with the foam of the wave rendered as delicate, clawed droplets that contrast with the smooth, sweeping curves of the water. Three oshiokuri-bune, or fast boats used for transporting live fish, are depicted navigating the troughs of the waves. The rowers are shown huddled low, their bodies angled to match the rhythm of the sea.
This work is a prime example of the ukiyo-e genre, which focused on scenes of daily life, travel, and the natural world. Hokusai moved away from the traditional focus on human figures to explore the relationship between humanity and the environment. The print is not merely a depiction of a storm, but a study in perspective and scale. By placing the mountain in the background, Hokusai creates a sense of depth that draws the eye across the frame. The use of negative space in the sky and the controlled application of colour demonstrate the technical precision required for multi-block printing.
