A detailed etching by Norbert Goeneutte featuring a figure in traditional attire, rendered with expressive cross-hatching and strong tonal contrast.
Types Mauresques is an etching by the French artist Norbert Goeneutte, produced during the late nineteenth century. Goeneutte, a contemporary of the Impressionists and a close associate of Renoir, often turned his attention to the human figure, capturing subjects with a direct, observational approach. This work displays his technical proficiency with the etching needle, utilising dense cross-hatching to build form and shadow.
The composition features a figure dressed in traditional attire, including a turban and a sash, leaning against a horizontal surface. The background is rendered in deep, dark tones, which pushes the figure forward and creates a sense of volume. Goeneutte employs varied line weights to define the folds of the fabric and the contours of the subject, demonstrating a focus on the texture of the clothing and the physical presence of the individual. The print bears the mark of the publisher A. Cadart, who was instrumental in the revival of etching as a medium for original artistic expression in France during this period.
This piece reflects the broader interest in ethnographic and foreign subjects that circulated within Parisian artistic circles at the time. Rather than relying on idealised forms, Goeneutte presents a study of character and costume. The stark contrast between the light-catching surfaces of the clothing and the shadowed background provides a sense of atmospheric depth. The work remains a clear example of the graphic output of the period, where the artist acted as both draughtsman and printmaker. By focusing on the specific details of the subject, Goeneutte avoids sentimentality, opting instead for a grounded, observational style that characterises much of his graphic work.
