A traditional ink wash scroll by the scholar-official Bao Shichen, featuring two riders and expressive calligraphy.
This hanging scroll by Bao Shichen (1775-1855) presents a scene of two figures mounted on donkeys, rendered in the traditional ink wash style of the Qing period. Bao Shichen was a scholar, official, and calligrapher, and his approach to visual art often reflects the disciplined, expressive nature of his literary pursuits. The figures are depicted with minimal, fluid brushwork, prioritising the capture of movement and character over anatomical precision. The donkeys are sketched with simple, gestural strokes, conveying a sense of weary travel or quiet contemplation.
The upper portion of the scroll is dominated by a substantial passage of calligraphy. This integration of text and image is a hallmark of the literati tradition, where the artist's brushwork in the characters is as significant as the painted figures below. The ink tones vary from deep, saturated blacks to diluted grey washes, creating a subtle sense of volume and depth within the figures' robes. The composition is balanced, with the weight of the calligraphy providing a visual anchor for the lighter, more open space occupied by the riders.
Bao Shichen is perhaps better known for his contributions to the study of calligraphy, particularly his work on the Northern Wei stele style. This interest in historical scripts informs the rhythmic, confident quality of the characters present here. The work functions as a meditation on the scholar-official's life, often associated with travel, study, and the pursuit of wisdom. The paper shows the natural ageing typical of such scrolls, with a warm, neutral tone that complements the monochrome ink palette. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the late Qing intellectual class, where art served as a vehicle for personal expression and philosophical reflection.
