Beschreibung
A contemplative Romantic scene by Caspar David Friedrich, featuring two figures observing a vast, luminous horizon from a rocky shore.
Caspar David Friedrich, a central figure of German Romanticism, produced this work around 1817. The composition features two figures viewed from behind, a technique known as the Rückenfigur, which invites the viewer to adopt the perspective of the subjects. They stand upon a rocky shore, gazing out toward a vast, atmospheric horizon where the sea meets a pale, expansive sky.
The painting is characterised by its reduction of detail and focus on light. The sun, positioned low on the horizon, casts a soft glow across the water, creating a sense of quietude. The foreground is dominated by dark, muted tones, which contrast with the luminous, ethereal quality of the sky. Friedrich often used such settings to explore themes of human existence in relation to the natural world. The figures, dressed in traditional German frock coats, appear small against the immense scale of the environment.
This work is held in the collection of the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin. It exemplifies the artist's interest in the sublime, where nature is depicted not merely as a physical space, but as a site for contemplation. The lack of narrative action encourages a meditative engagement with the canvas. The brushwork remains restrained, allowing the subtle shifts in colour and tone to define the mood. By stripping away extraneous elements, Friedrich directs attention to the interplay between the finite human presence and the infinite horizon. The painting remains a primary example of how nineteenth-century artists utilised light and space to evoke internal states of mind.
