This woodblock print by Utagawa Sadahide belongs to the Yokohama-e genre, a category of ukiyo-e that emerged following the opening of the port of Yokohama to foreign trade in 1859. As a student of Kunisada, Sadahide was a prolific producer of these prints, which functioned as visual news reports for a Japanese public curious about the appearance and customs of foreigners arriving in their country.
The composition depicts two figures identified by the text as Chinese men. The artist employs a clean, graphic style, focusing on the distinct attire of the subjects, including their long robes and braided hairstyles. The figure on the left is shown from behind, while the figure on the right faces the viewer, holding a folding fan. The use of line is precise, typical of the mid-nineteenth-century woodblock tradition, and the colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft washes and clear outlines to define the forms against a pale background.
Yokohama-e prints often featured subjects from various nations, including Americans, British, French, and Chinese individuals. These works were mass-produced to satisfy the demand for information about the outside world during the Bakumatsu period. While the artist may not have had direct access to the individuals depicted, the prints reflect the contemporary Japanese perception of foreign visitors. The inclusion of calligraphic text provides context, identifying the subjects and the nature of the scene. This print is a clear example of the documentary function of ukiyo-e during a period of rapid social and political change in Japan, capturing a moment of cross-cultural encounter through the lens of traditional printmaking techniques.
