An evocative 1910 etching by Swedish master Anders Zorn, capturing two figures wading in water through expressive, rhythmic line work.
Anders Zorn, a Swedish artist of international repute during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, produced this etching in 1910. Zorn is recognised for his technical mastery of the etching medium, a skill that allowed him to capture the transient qualities of light and movement with remarkable economy of line. In this work, two figures are depicted wading in shallow water, their forms rendered through a series of rapid, directional strokes that define both the anatomy of the bathers and the rippling surface of the water.
The composition relies on the contrast between the dark, hatched lines of the figures and the lighter, more open areas of the paper, which represent the reflective quality of the water. Zorn often returned to the theme of bathers, frequently setting them within the natural environment of the Swedish countryside. Artist Biography
Anders Zorn
Zorn painted three sitting American presidents: Grover Cleveland, William Howard Taft and Theodore Roosevelt. For a Swedish painter from a small town in Dalarna, the commissions represented an extraordinary international reach, built on a reputation as one of the finest portrait painters and etchers of his generation.
He was born in Mora in 1860, studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm, and worked across Paris, London and the United States. His ability to render water and flesh with loose, confident brushwork set him apart from more academic contemporaries. His etchings, numbering roughly three hundred, are considered among the finest of the period.
He returned to Mora later in life, establishing a museum and open-air museum there. The Zorn Museum remains a major cultural institution in Sweden. He died in Mora in 1920, at sixty.
