This portrait of Prince Bismarck is part of the Twelve Portraits series, a collection of woodcut prints produced by William Nicholson at the close of the nineteenth century. Nicholson, working alongside James Pryde under the pseudonym the Beggarstaff Brothers, developed a distinct graphic style that prioritised economy of line and bold tonal contrast. This approach is evident here, where the figure of the statesman is rendered through a limited palette of black, white, and a muted ochre background.
The composition relies on the interplay between solid blocks of colour and negative space. Bismarck is depicted in profile, his silhouette dominating the frame. The heavy, dark coat provides a stark contrast to the lighter ground, while the facial features are suggested through minimal, precise carving. This technique reflects the influence of Japanese woodblock prints, which were widely admired by artists of the period for their ability to convey character through simplified forms rather than excessive detail.
