A detailed eighteenth-century etching of three sheep, based on a design by Nicolaes Berchem and executed by the French engraver François Vivares.
This etching by François Vivares presents a pastoral scene featuring three sheep. The composition is structured around a standing sheep positioned on the right, while two others rest in the foreground. The work reflects the eighteenth-century interest in animal studies, a genre that often drew inspiration from Dutch masters of the previous century. The inscription 'Berghem delin' indicates that Vivares based this print on a drawing by the Dutch artist Nicolaes Berchem, a figure known for his depictions of rural life and livestock.
Vivares, a French engraver who spent much of his career in London, was highly regarded for his technical precision. His approach to the medium allows for a clear distinction between the textures of the sheep's wool and the sparse, rocky ground they occupy. The lines are controlled and deliberate, creating a sense of volume through cross-hatching and varied stroke density. The background remains minimal, keeping the focus entirely on the anatomical forms of the animals.
This print captures the quiet observation characteristic of the period. It avoids dramatic narrative, instead offering a study of form and texture. The inclusion of the publisher's mark, 'Sold by F. Vivares London', provides insight into the commercial distribution of such prints during the mid-eighteenth century, when the market for reproductive engravings was active in Britain. The work serves as a record of the collaborative nature of printmaking, where the skills of the draughtsman and the engraver combined to bring European artistic traditions to a wider audience. The print remains a clean example of the period's aesthetic, prioritising clarity and observational accuracy over ornamentation.
