A precise seventeenth-century scientific study of two insects, rendered in ink and watercolour by Dutch artist Rochus van Veen in 1674.
This study, dated 1674, captures two distinct insect specimens rendered with the precision characteristic of seventeenth-century Dutch natural history documentation. Rochus van Veen, a painter active in the Netherlands during the latter half of the seventeenth century, demonstrates a keen observational approach to his subjects. The work reflects the period's fascination with the natural world, a time when artists and scientists often collaborated to catalogue the diversity of flora and fauna.
The composition is sparse, placing the two insects against a clean, neutral background. This arrangement allows the viewer to focus entirely on the anatomical details of the specimens. On the left, a winged insect is depicted with delicate, translucent wing structures and fine body segments. To the right, a larger, ground-dwelling insect, likely a cricket or similar orthopteran, is shown in profile. The artist uses subtle washes of brown and grey ink to suggest the texture of the exoskeletons and the articulation of the limbs. The lines are controlled and deliberate, prioritising accuracy over decorative flourish.
Van Veen's work belongs to a tradition of scientific drawing that sought to record nature with objectivity. Unlike the more dramatic still-life paintings of the era, which often included insects as symbolic elements within larger arrangements, this piece functions as a direct study. The signature and date are inscribed clearly at the bottom, confirming its status as a finished observation. The paper retains a warm, aged tone, which complements the muted palette of the ink and watercolour. This print offers a glimpse into the meticulous methods used by early modern naturalists to document the smaller inhabitants of the world, providing a clear, unadorned view of biological form.
