A delicate woodblock print by Uematsu Tōshū featuring horsetail plants and freshwater clams, accompanied by traditional Japanese calligraphy.
This woodblock print by Uematsu Tōshū depicts a seasonal pairing of tsukushi (horsetail) and shijimi (freshwater clams). The composition follows the tradition of surimono, which are privately commissioned prints often featuring poetry alongside imagery. The artist employs a restrained palette, focusing on the earthy tones of the plant stems and the dark, rounded forms of the shells. The lines are precise and delicate, capturing the texture of the horsetail heads and the smooth surfaces of the clamshells.
Japanese woodblock printing of this period often balanced natural observation with calligraphic elements. Here, the text flows around the botanical subjects, integrating the written word into the visual space. The paper texture remains visible, providing a tactile quality to the print. The arrangement is sparse, allowing the viewer to focus on the individual characteristics of the specimens. This work reflects the interest in nature studies that permeated the artistic circles of the Meiji era, where artists documented flora and fauna with scientific accuracy while maintaining aesthetic harmony.
Uematsu Tōshū was known for his contributions to the genre of kachō-ga, or bird-and-flower pictures, which frequently extended to include other natural subjects. The print demonstrates a high level of technical skill in the carving and printing process, particularly in the subtle gradation of colour on the horsetail tips. The composition avoids clutter, relying on the negative space of the paper to define the boundaries of the subjects. This print is a representative example of the refined, small-scale works produced for connoisseurs of the time, prioritising subtle observation over dramatic flair.
