Triptych with The Lamentation of Christ - Master of the Krainburg Altar

A late Gothic triptych featuring the Lamentation of Christ flanked by St. Barbara and St. Catherine of Alexandria, rendered with traditional gold-leaf detailing.

This triptych, attributed to the Master of the Krainburg Altar, represents the devotional art produced in the Alpine regions of Austria during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. The central panel depicts the Lamentation of Christ, a common subject in Northern European art of the period. The composition focuses on the grief of the Virgin Mary as she cradles the body of Christ, supported by other figures in a landscape setting that features a distant, walled city. The muted tones and careful attention to the anatomical rendering of the figures reflect the stylistic conventions of the era.

The side wings feature two prominent saints, St. Barbara on the left and St. Catherine of Alexandria on the right. Both figures are presented against a gold-leaf background decorated with embossed foliate patterns, a technique that provides a contrast to the more naturalistic treatment of the central scene. St. Barbara is identified by her tower, while St. Catherine holds the sword and wheel associated with her martyrdom. The figures are rendered with a focus on their garments, which display the heavy folds and linear qualities typical of late Gothic painting.

This work functions as a portable altarpiece, designed for private or small-scale chapel use. The reverse of the wings, though not visible in this view, traditionally contains the Annunciation, completing the narrative cycle of the life of Christ. The preservation of the original framing elements allows for an understanding of how such objects were displayed in their original context.
