The figure on the left holds a vessel, while the figure on the right, Saint Catherine of Alexandria, is identified by her traditional attributes: the palm of martyrdom and the spiked wheel. The work is executed in tempera on wood, utilising gold leaf for the background, which creates a flat, ethereal space typical of the period.

Lorenzetti demonstrates a shift toward humanised figures, moving away from the rigid Byzantine style. The interaction between the Madonna and the Christ Child is tender, with the child reaching toward his mother. The drapery of the garments is rendered with attention to volume, providing a sense of weight to the figures. The architectural framing of the triptych, with its pointed arches, reflects the Gothic influence prevalent in Italian ecclesiastical art at the time. Small medallions at the apex of each arch contain additional figures, adding to the narrative complexity of the piece.
