A detailed seventeenth-century Dutch etching depicting the human life cycle as a ten-step staircase, serving as a moralising memento mori.
This etching by the Dutch printmaker Pieter Nolpe presents a moralising allegory known as the Trap des Levens, or The Staircase of Life. The composition depicts the human life cycle as a series of ten steps, arranged in a pyramid structure. Each step represents a decade of existence, beginning with infancy at the base and ascending to the peak of maturity before descending toward old age and death. The central figure of a woman is shown at various stages of her life, dressed in the fashion of the seventeenth-century Dutch middle class.
At the summit, the figure stands at the age of fifty, representing the zenith of her physical and social standing. As the steps progress downwards on either side, the figures show the inevitable decline of health and vitality. The base of the structure contains a complex narrative scene featuring a central archway. Within this space, the artist includes religious imagery, including a depiction of the Last Judgment and the presence of skeletal figures representing mortality. These elements serve as a reminder of the transient nature of human existence, a common theme in Dutch art of this period.
The print is framed by two trees, one flourishing and one barren, which further reinforce the cycle of growth and decay. The inclusion of extensive Dutch text in the cartouches at the top and bottom provides didactic commentary on the stages of life, urging the viewer to consider their spiritual state. Nolpe, known for his technical skill in etching, uses fine lines to define the textures of the clothing and the architectural details of the staircase. This work functions as a memento mori, encouraging reflection on the passage of time and the certainty of death, while maintaining the structured, orderly aesthetic characteristic of seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking.
