A delicate kacho-ga bird-and-flower painting by Kano Yukinobu, featuring a titmouse in flight beside pomegranate blossoms.
This work by Kano Yukinobu, a member of the influential Kano school of Japanese painting, exemplifies the kacho-ga tradition. The composition features a titmouse captured in mid-flight, positioned against a branch of pomegranate flowers that extends from the left side of the frame. The artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the soft, muted tones of the silk background to provide a neutral space that emphasises the movement of the bird and the delicate structure of the blossoms.
The Kano school, active from the 15th century onwards, often balanced Chinese-influenced ink wash techniques with a more decorative approach to colour. Here, the brushwork is precise and controlled, reflecting the technical discipline required by the school. The pomegranate branch is rendered with careful attention to the organic forms of leaves and petals, while the titmouse is depicted with a sense of immediacy. The negative space, or ma, is used effectively to create a sense of air and distance, a common feature in East Asian painting that invites the viewer to focus on the interaction between the subject and its environment.
This print captures the aesthetic of the Muromachi period, where the observation of nature was a primary subject for artists. The inclusion of the pomegranate, a symbol often associated with fertility and abundance in various cultures, adds a layer of traditional meaning to the scene. The overall balance of the composition, with the weight of the floral branch countered by the solitary bird, demonstrates the artist's skill in creating harmony within a limited pictorial field. This piece is a representative example of the refined, observational style that defined the Kano school's approach to natural subjects during the 16th century.
