A striking title page featuring expressive, hand-carved typography from Ernst Barlach's 1922 portfolio, The Transformations of God.
This title page originates from the portfolio Die Wandlungen Gottes (The Transformations of God), a series of seven woodcuts produced by Ernst Barlach in 1922. Barlach, a sculptor, printmaker, and writer, occupies a distinct position within German Expressionism. His work often explores themes of human suffering, spiritual struggle, and the existential condition, frequently rendered with a stark, angular aesthetic that draws upon medieval German woodcarving traditions.
The typography displayed here reflects the artist's interest in the expressive potential of lettering. Rather than employing a standard typeface, Barlach treats the characters as sculptural forms. The letters possess a heavy, rhythmic quality, echoing the physical labour involved in carving into wood blocks. The sharp terminals and compressed forms create a visual tension that aligns with the broader thematic concerns of the portfolio, which examines the manifestations of the divine in the mundane world.
Barlach's approach to printmaking is characterised by a rejection of unnecessary detail. He focuses on the essential structure of his subjects, whether they are human figures or, as in this instance, the written word. The composition is balanced and deliberate, with the text occupying the centre of the page, allowing the negative space to frame the bold, black ink forms. This print provides insight into the artist's graphic sensibility and his ability to imbue even functional elements, such as a title page, with a sense of gravity and purpose. It is a clear example of the synthesis between literature and visual art that defined much of Barlach's output during the interwar period.
