A 1631 etching by Nicolaes Moeyaert, serving as the title page for the tragedy Albonus en Rosimonda.
This etching serves as the title page for the 1631 publication of 'Albonus en Rosimonda', a tragedy written by Jacob Struys and printed in Amsterdam by Cornelis Willemsz. Blaeu-Laecken. Nicolaes Moeyaert, a prominent Dutch painter and etcher associated with the Pre-Rembrandtists, provided this visual introduction to the text. The composition is divided into distinct zones, typical of seventeenth-century book design. The upper portion features bold typography announcing the play, while the central illustrative panel depicts a dramatic scene from the narrative.
Within the central frame, two figures are seated at a table, engaged in a tense interaction. The scene captures the narrative's focus on vengeance and betrayal. To the right, a smaller, secondary scene shows a figure in a bedchamber, providing a visual summary of the play's tragic events. The etching demonstrates Moeyaert's skill in managing narrative clarity within a confined space. His use of line work creates texture on the drapery and the architectural elements of the room, while the figures are rendered with expressive gestures that convey the gravity of the theatrical subject matter.
The bottom section provides the publication details, including the printer's address in the Sint Jans-straet. As a piece of historical ephemera, this print offers insight into the intersection of literature and visual art in the Dutch Golden Age. It functions as both a functional document and a narrative preview, inviting the reader into the world of the play before they have turned the first page. The work remains a fine example of the collaborative nature of seventeenth-century printing, where artists and authors worked in tandem to produce works for the growing urban market in Amsterdam.
