A sixteenth-century woodcut depicting the Fall of Man, originating from a Dutch New Testament printed by Willem Vorsterman.
This woodcut, attributed to the workshop of Willem Vorsterman, originates from a sixteenth-century Dutch edition of the New Testament. Vorsterman was a prominent printer and publisher based in Antwerp, active during a period when the production of vernacular Bibles became a significant commercial and religious activity. The print depicts the biblical narrative of the Fall of Man, featuring Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
The composition follows traditional iconographic conventions of the era. Eve stands beside the tree of knowledge, offering the forbidden fruit to Adam, who is seated on the ground. A serpent, coiled around the trunk of the tree, observes the exchange. In the background, a figure holding a sword represents the expulsion from Paradise, providing a narrative sequence within a single frame. The style is characteristic of early sixteenth-century Northern European woodcuts, utilising bold, clear lines to define the figures and the surrounding environment.
The application of hand-colouring, common in printed materials of this time, adds a layer of visual interest to the stark black-and-white lines of the woodblock. The palette is muted, relying on earth tones and greens to suggest the natural setting. The figures are rendered with a focus on narrative clarity rather than anatomical precision, typical of the period's illustrative approach to religious texts. This print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the Reformation era, where such imagery served to educate and engage readers of printed Bibles. The work remains a representative example of the woodcut medium as it was employed in early modern book production, balancing technical constraints with the need for accessible, didactic imagery.
