A classical history painting by Domenichino depicting the encounter between Alexander the Great and the noblewoman Timoclea.
This work by the Italian Baroque painter Domenichino depicts a narrative from the life of Alexander the Great. The scene captures the moment Timoclea, a noblewoman of Thebes, is brought before the Macedonian conqueror. According to historical accounts, Timoclea had thrown her assailant into a well, an act of defiance that earned her the respect of Alexander. The composition is contained within an oval format, a choice that directs the viewer towards the central interaction between the seated ruler and the standing woman.
Domenichino, a pupil of Annibale Carracci, employs the principles of the Bolognese School. The figures are arranged with clarity, and the narrative is communicated through distinct gestures and expressions. Alexander, positioned on the left, gestures towards Timoclea, who stands with composure. Behind them, soldiers lead other captives, providing a sense of the broader military context. The background features a fortified city, rendered with soft atmospheric perspective that recedes into the distance. The palette consists of muted earth tones, punctuated by the brighter garments of the figures, which helps to organise the visual space.
The painting reflects the interest in classical history common among seventeenth-century patrons. Domenichino balances the dramatic tension of the encounter with a sense of order and restraint. The figures are modelled with a focus on anatomical accuracy, typical of the artist's training. This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to translate complex literary sources into a coherent visual language. The inclusion of the original ornate frame, which features classical motifs, complements the historical subject matter of the painting. This print offers a reproduction of the work as it appears in its current collection, preserving the relationship between the canvas and its decorative surround.
