A detailed reproduction of a 14th-century ceramic tile featuring a mihrab design with relief-moulded Arabic calligraphy and lustre glaze.
This ceramic tile features a mihrab, or prayer niche, design rendered in relief. The surface is covered in dense Arabic calligraphy, a common feature in Ilkhanid period ceramics. The script is executed in a combination of cobalt blue and lustre glazes, which create a metallic sheen against the ceramic body. The composition is divided into two primary sections: the arched upper niche and the rectangular lower panel. Both areas are framed by borders of further inscriptions, likely verses from the Quran or poetic passages.
The use of lustreware, a technique involving the application of metallic oxides to the glaze, allows the surface to reflect light in a way that mimics precious metals. This method was highly valued in the medieval Islamic world for its ability to transform functional objects into items of visual luxury. The relief work provides a tactile quality to the piece, as the letters are raised above the background, creating shadows that shift with the light. The blue glaze, derived from cobalt, provides a deep contrast to the brownish tones of the lustre, ensuring the text remains legible despite the density of the script.
Such tiles were often produced in workshops in cities like Kashan, which was a centre for ceramic production during the 13th and 14th centuries. These objects were typically used to decorate the walls of mosques or shrines, where the reflective quality of the lustre would catch the light of oil lamps. The precision required to mould the clay and apply the glaze demonstrates the technical skill of the artisans of the period. This print captures the texture and the specific colour palette of the original ceramic, offering a view of the craftsmanship involved in creating these architectural elements.
