Three Musicians is a large-scale oil painting that represents the culmination of Synthetic Cubism. The composition features three figures: a Pierrot playing a woodwind instrument, a Harlequin strumming a guitar, and a monk holding sheet music. A dog is visible beneath the table, its silhouette partially obscured by the flat, overlapping planes of the scene.

Picasso employs a collage-like aesthetic, despite the work being executed entirely in paint. The figures are constructed from geometric shapes, flattened forms, and bold, opaque colour blocks. The palette is dominated by deep browns, blacks, and ochres, punctuated by sharp contrasts of blue, red, and yellow. This arrangement creates a sense of shallow, stage-like depth, where the figures appear as if they are cut from paper and layered upon one another.

The work reflects Picasso's interest in the commedia dell'arte, a recurring theme in his oeuvre. By using these traditional theatrical archetypes, he explores the relationship between performance, identity, and artifice. The masks worn by the musicians further distance the subjects from naturalistic representation, emphasising the constructed nature of the image. The rigid, angular forms of the musicians contrast with the soft, dark shadow of the dog, creating a rhythmic visual balance across the canvas.

This painting is one of two versions created by the artist during the summer of 1921 in Fontainebleau. While the other version resides in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, this iteration is held by the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It remains a primary example of how Picasso utilised the visual language of Cubism to organise complex, multi-figure compositions into a coherent, albeit fragmented, whole.
