Three-Masted Ship - Alfred Wallis

A characteristic maritime study by Alfred Wallis, featuring a three-masted ship rendered in his signature intuitive, non-academic style on salvaged cardboard.

Alfred Wallis, a retired Cornish fisherman and scrap merchant, began painting in his late sixties following the death of his wife. Working primarily on salvaged cardboard and scraps of wood, he utilised whatever materials were available to him. His approach to composition is intuitive rather than academic, often ignoring traditional perspective in favour of a flattened, map-like arrangement that prioritises the relative importance of the vessels over their spatial distance from the viewer.

In this work, the three-masted ship occupies the centre of the frame, rendered with a focus on the structural details of the rigging and hull. Wallis often used a limited palette, frequently relying on household paints, which contributes to the raw, unrefined quality of his output. The horizon line is suggested by a simple horizontal band, separating the sea from the sky. The smaller vessels in the foreground provide a sense of scale, yet they exist within the same compressed space as the larger ship.

Wallis did not consider himself an artist in the professional sense, but his work attracted the attention of Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood, who visited St Ives in 1928. They recognised the authenticity in his direct, unmediated depiction of the sea and the ships he had spent his life observing. His work remains a primary example of British folk art, capturing the essence of the Cornish maritime environment through a personal, non-conformist lens. This print reproduces the textures of the original cardboard support, allowing the viewer to appreciate the modest nature of the materials Wallis chose for his creative output.
