Beschreibung
A striking maritime study by Cornish artist Alfred Wallis, featuring a three-masted schooner rendered in his signature naïve, direct style on cardboard.
Alfred Wallis, a Cornish fisherman who began painting in his late sixties, produced works that possess a raw, immediate quality. He worked primarily on scavenged materials, such as cardboard boxes and scraps of paper, using limited palettes of household paint. His lack of formal training allowed him to bypass traditional perspective, resulting in compositions where the scale of objects is determined by their importance to the narrative rather than their distance from the viewer.
In this depiction of a three-masted schooner, the vessel dominates the frame. The ship is rendered with a focus on its structural components, with the sails and rigging occupying the majority of the pictorial space. The sea is represented by rhythmic, horizontal bands of blue and white, which convey the movement of water through simple, repetitive brushwork. The background is a flat, earthy tone, typical of the cardboard surfaces Wallis favoured. This choice of ground provides a neutral contrast to the dark hull and sails of the ship.
Wallis painted from memory, drawing upon his years spent at sea. His work is often associated with the St Ives group of artists, including Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood, who discovered his paintings in 1928 and admired their unmediated honesty. This piece reflects his characteristic approach: a direct, unpretentious record of maritime life. The composition is balanced yet unconventional, prioritising the essence of the subject over anatomical or spatial accuracy. By using the materials at hand, Wallis created a body of work that remains distinct within the history of twentieth-century British art, offering a view of the sea that is both personal and evocative.
