A traditional Japanese ink painting depicting the legendary meeting of three scholars at Tiger Ravine, rendered with fluid brushwork on silk.
This hanging scroll depicts the classic East Asian theme of the Three Laughers of Tiger Ravine. The subject features the Buddhist monk Huiyuan, the poet Tao Yuanming, and the Taoist Lu Xiujing. According to legend, the three men met at Mount Lu and became so absorbed in their conversation that they forgot the strict boundaries of their respective religious and social paths. When they finally parted, they walked together past the Tiger Ravine, a boundary Huiyuan had vowed never to cross. Upon hearing the tiger roar, they realised they had crossed the line and burst into laughter at their own human fallibility.
Sekishō Shōan employs a style characteristic of the Muromachi period, where ink wash techniques define the figures and the surrounding environment. The composition is structured vertically, typical of hanging scrolls, with the three figures positioned in the foreground. Their robes are rendered with fluid, calligraphic lines that suggest movement and weight. The background features a stylised pine tree and rocky outcrops, which provide a sense of place without distracting from the interaction between the men. The muted palette relies on subtle ink tones and light washes of colour, creating a sense of age and quiet contemplation.
The work reflects the influence of Chinese Chan (Zen) painting traditions on Japanese artists of the era. The focus remains on the expressive quality of the figures, particularly their facial expressions, which convey the joy of their shared moment. The silk support has aged over time, adding a patina that softens the contrast between the ink and the background. This piece serves as a visual representation of the harmony found in transcending sectarian divisions, a popular subject for scholars and monks alike during the period.
