A dramatic woodblock print by Shunbaisai Hokuei depicting a scene from the Suikoden series, featuring a tattooed warrior in a classic Kabuki pose.
This woodblock print by Shunbaisai Hokuei belongs to the series One Hundred Eight Heroes of the Theater Suikoden. The series draws inspiration from the Chinese novel Water Margin, which was adapted into popular Kabuki theatre performances during the Edo period. Hokuei, a prominent artist of the Kamigata school based in Osaka, specialised in depicting actors in their dramatic roles.
The composition captures a moment of high tension. A central figure, adorned with elaborate tattoos on their arms, leans against a gnarled pine tree. The figure holds a long staff, their posture suggesting a sudden defensive or offensive manoeuvre. The clothing is rendered with precise detail, particularly the patterned fabric of the lower garment, which displays circular motifs. The background features a simplified, flat treatment of a distant shoreline and sky, typical of the period's aesthetic, which prioritises the theatricality of the subject over realistic depth.
Hokuei uses a controlled palette, balancing the muted tones of the tree and ground with the saturated colours of the figure's costume. The cartouche in the upper right corner provides the series title and the specific character name, a standard feature in ukiyo-e prints to assist the viewer in identifying the narrative context. The print reflects the intersection of literature, folklore, and the performing arts that defined the cultural output of nineteenth-century Japan. The lines are clean and deliberate, characteristic of the woodblock carving techniques employed by the artisans who collaborated with Hokuei to produce these works for a wide audience of theatre enthusiasts and collectors.
