Beschreibung
A maritime scene by Alfred Wallis, featuring three boats rendered in his signature intuitive, non-academic style on a textured, grey-toned sea.
Alfred Wallis, a Cornish fisherman turned painter, produced this work during his later years in St Ives. His approach to art is defined by a lack of formal training, which allowed him to bypass traditional perspective in favour of a personal, intuitive mapping of the sea. Wallis often painted on scavenged materials, such as cardboard boxes or scraps of wood, using limited palettes of household paint. This choice of medium is characteristic of his practice, where the physical constraints of the surface often dictated the arrangement of the vessels.
In this composition, three distinct watercraft occupy a grey, textured expanse of water. The ships are rendered with a focus on their essential forms rather than realistic detail. The absence of a horizon line creates a flattened, map-like view of the harbour. This technique reflects his experience as a mariner, where the relative position of objects mattered more than their appearance from a fixed viewpoint. The dark, silhouetted hulls of the boats contrast against the lighter, agitated brushwork of the sea, which suggests the movement of tides and currents.
Wallis was discovered by Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood in 1928, who were drawn to the raw, unmediated quality of his work. His output is frequently associated with the development of British Modernism, as his disregard for academic rules influenced the St Ives group of artists. This print captures the quiet, observational nature of his work, preserving the texture of the original cardboard support. The image provides a glimpse into the maritime life of early twentieth-century Cornwall, viewed through the lens of an artist who spent his life working upon the water.
