A 16th-century Mughal miniature from the Tuti-nama, depicting a royal coronation and a narrative scene of justice.
This miniature painting originates from the Tuti-nama, or Tales of a Parrot, a significant manuscript produced during the early Mughal period. The work depicts a dual narrative sequence common in Persian and Indian manuscript traditions. The upper register shows a royal coronation, where a young prince sits upon a throne beneath a canopy, surrounded by musicians and attendants. The scene conveys the formal atmosphere of a courtly gathering through the use of flattened perspective and clear, distinct figures.
The lower register shifts to a more dramatic narrative, illustrating the execution of a handmaiden. The composition uses a vertical division to separate the two events, allowing the viewer to follow the moral progression of the story. The artist employs a palette of mineral pigments, including gold leaf, to define the garments and architectural elements. The figures are rendered with precise outlines, typical of the mid-sixteenth-century Mughal style, which began to synthesise Persian artistic conventions with indigenous Indian techniques.
Suraju, the artist identified with this folio, demonstrates a clear approach to storytelling through visual shorthand. The inclusion of Persian calligraphy at the base of the page integrates the text with the image, a hallmark of the illustrated book format. The figures are set against a decorative background, with the foliage and tiled surfaces providing a sense of place without relying on Western linear perspective. This print captures the specific aesthetic of the Akbar-period workshops, where the production of manuscripts was a collaborative effort between calligraphers, painters, and gilders. The work remains a primary example of how narrative literature was translated into visual form for the Mughal court, balancing the requirements of moral instruction with the decorative demands of the royal library.
