A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock portrait of the writer Santō Kyōden, captured in a moment of quiet reflection with his smoking pipe.
This woodblock print by Chōkyōsai Eiri depicts the celebrated writer and artist Santō Kyōden, also known by his artistic name Kitao Masanobu. The composition focuses on the subject in a moment of quiet contemplation, holding a smoking pipe. The artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the stark contrast between the dark background and the lighter tones of the subject's face to define the form.
Eiri, a follower of the Chōshū school, was active during the late eighteenth century. His work often features the refined, elongated facial features characteristic of the period. The print captures the intellectual atmosphere surrounding the literary circles of Edo. The inclusion of writing implements and a partially unfurled scroll on the table suggests the subject's professional identity. The red fabric covering the table provides a singular point of colour, drawing the eye towards the tools of the writer's trade.
Technically, the print demonstrates the precision of the Ukiyo-e tradition. The lines are clean and deliberate, defining the contours of the face and the folds of the kimono with economy. The background is a solid, flat field, which pushes the figure forward and creates a sense of intimacy. This portrait serves as a record of a specific cultural figure, documenting the appearance and the professional environment of a man who was a central participant in the literary life of his time. The work remains a clear example of the portraiture style favoured by Eiri, who often depicted actors and writers with a sense of individual character rather than mere idealisation.
