The Wrestling Bretons - Paul Sérusier

Paul Sérusier, a central figure in the Nabis group, produced this work during his time in Brittany. The painting depicts a traditional wrestling match, a common spectacle in rural Breton life at the time. Sérusier employs a flattened perspective and simplified forms, which align with the aesthetic goals of the Nabis. The figures of the two wrestlers are rendered with minimal modelling, their bodies forming a cohesive, interlocking shape against the pale, grassy ground.

Behind the wrestlers, a crowd of spectators watches the event. These figures are depicted in dark, muted clothing, their faces and postures reduced to essential silhouettes. The use of colour is restrained, relying on a palette of earthy tones, deep blues, and pale yellows to create a sense of quiet observation. The composition avoids traditional depth, instead organising the scene into distinct horizontal bands. This approach reflects the influence of Japanese woodblock prints, which were widely admired by the Nabis for their graphic clarity and decorative potential.

Sérusier was deeply interested in the synthesis of observation and subjective expression. Rather than attempting a realistic portrayal of the event, he focuses on the rhythmic quality of the figures and the atmosphere of the gathering. The painting captures a moment of physical tension, yet the overall effect is one of stillness and formal order. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Sérusier directs the viewer to the structural relationships between the forms. This work provides an example of the transition toward abstraction that characterised the later stages of the nineteenth-century avant-garde in France. It remains a representative piece of the Nabis' interest in regional subjects and their departure from the naturalistic conventions of the previous generation.
