A striking example of Gustav Klimt's mature style, this work features two figures in an intimate embrace against a saturated red background.
Gustav Klimt painted The Women Friends, also known as Water Serpents II, during the latter part of his career. The work displays the characteristic stylistic shift toward a flatter, more decorative surface that defined his mature period. Two figures occupy the centre of the composition, their forms merging into a singular, unified shape against a backdrop of saturated red. The artist employs a flattened perspective, prioritising the arrangement of colour and pattern over traditional anatomical depth.
Klimt incorporates various motifs drawn from diverse sources, including East Asian art and Byzantine mosaics. A stylised bird and floral elements float in the background, creating a sense of suspended time. The figure on the left is partially nude, while the figure on the right wears a voluminous, flowing garment. Their proximity and the way they lean into one another suggest an intimate connection. The surface of the canvas is worked with a dense application of paint, creating a textured quality that interacts with the light.
This painting reflects the artist's interest in the female form and his departure from the more rigid academic standards of his early training. By removing the figures from a specific physical environment, Klimt creates a dreamlike atmosphere. The use of red as the dominant colour provides a warm, enveloping quality that draws the viewer into the scene. The work remains a primary example of the decorative approach that Klimt developed in Vienna at the turn of the twentieth century, demonstrating his ability to balance figurative representation with abstract, ornamental design elements.
