Beschreibung
A visionary watercolour by Samuel Palmer, capturing the golden, rolling fields of the Kentish countryside through a frame of dark, ancient trees.
Samuel Palmer produced this work during his Shoreham period, a time when he sought to capture the spiritual essence of the English countryside. The composition frames the expansive view of the Kentish valley through the heavy, dark boughs of ancient trees. This framing device creates a sense of enclosure, drawing the eye from the immediate, textured foreground into the golden, rolling fields that stretch toward the horizon.
Palmer utilised a dense application of watercolour and gouache to achieve a heightened, almost visionary quality. The palette relies on autumnal tones, with deep browns and burnt oranges dominating the foliage, contrasting against the lighter, sun-drenched plains below. His technique involves small, rhythmic brushstrokes that build up the surface, giving the trees and rocky outcrops a tactile, sculptural presence. The light appears to emanate from within the scene, suggesting a dreamlike state rather than a purely topographical record of the location.
This work reflects the influence of William Blake, whom Palmer met in 1824. The emphasis on imaginative vision over strict realism is evident in the exaggerated forms of the trees and the atmospheric treatment of the distant hills. By focusing on the specific character of the Weald, Palmer transformed a familiar rural scene into a personal, poetic statement. The work remains a primary example of his ability to imbue natural subjects with a sense of mystery and quiet intensity, characteristic of his most celebrated output from the early 1830s.
