A refined sixteenth-century study of the Visitation, rendered in pen, ink, and wash by the Flemish Mannerist artist Adriaan de Weerdt.
Adriaan de Weerdt, a Flemish painter and draughtsman active during the mid-sixteenth century, produced this study of the Visitation. The work depicts the meeting between the Virgin Mary and Saint Elizabeth, a subject drawn from the Gospel of Luke. De Weerdt employs a characteristic Mannerist approach, favouring elongated figures and a sense of dramatic movement in the drapery. The composition is structured with a clear foreground interaction, while the background suggests a distant, atmospheric setting through subtle washes.
The technique relies on the interplay of pen and brown ink, supplemented by brown wash and white heightening. This method allows for a range of tonal values, creating depth and volume in the figures. The artist captures the emotional weight of the encounter through the gestures of the two women, who stand before a architectural element that frames the scene. The flowing lines of their garments suggest a breeze, adding a dynamic quality to the otherwise quiet, devotional subject matter.
De Weerdt spent time in Italy, and the influence of the Italian Renaissance is visible in his treatment of the human form and the classical drapery. However, the work retains the specific stylistic traits of the Northern tradition, particularly in the handling of the ink and the focus on linear precision. This drawing provides insight into the preparatory processes of the period, where artists used such studies to refine compositions before transferring them to larger panels or canvases. The monochromatic palette focuses the viewer on the interaction between the figures, stripping away the distraction of colour to reveal the underlying structure of the design. It is a refined example of sixteenth-century draughtsmanship, demonstrating the technical skill required to balance light and shadow within a limited medium.
