A dramatic Baroque oil painting depicting Saint Jerome reacting to a celestial vision, characterised by intense tenebrism and expressive movement.
Giovanni Battista Langetti, a Genoese painter active in Venice, produced this dramatic interpretation of Saint Jerome during the mid-seventeenth century. The composition captures the saint in a moment of sudden, overwhelming spiritual encounter. Jerome is depicted in a state of physical and emotional agitation, his body twisted as he reacts to the celestial sound of a trumpet played by an angel above.
Langetti employs the tenebrism characteristic of the period, using deep shadows to contrast with the illuminated figures. The saint, traditionally shown as an elderly hermit, is rendered with muscular tension and expressive anatomy. Beside him, the lion, his constant companion in iconography, remains in the lower shadows, while the skull and open books at his feet serve as reminders of his scholarly life and the transience of existence.
The brushwork is energetic and fluid, typical of the Venetian school's influence on Langetti's style. The palette relies on earthy tones for the background and the saint's skin, punctuated by the bold, saturated red of his drapery and the cool blue of the angel's garments. This work demonstrates the artist's interest in the psychological intensity of religious subjects, moving away from static depictions toward a more visceral, theatrical narrative. The lighting directs the viewer's eye from the celestial trumpet down to the saint's startled expression, creating a clear diagonal movement across the canvas. This piece is a representative example of the Tenebroso style that defined much of Langetti's career in Venice, where he became known for his ability to convey raw human emotion through dramatic lighting and dynamic poses.
