A dramatic interpretation of Shakespeare's Henry VIII, depicting the ethereal vision of Queen Catherine of Aragon by Henry Fuseli.
Henry Fuseli, a Swiss-born painter active in London, produced this work as part of his contribution to the Boydell Shakespeare Gallery. The scene depicts a moment from Act IV, Scene II of Shakespeare's Henry VIII, where the ailing Queen Catherine experiences a vision of spirits dancing before her. Fuseli, known for his interest in the supernatural and the dramatic, captures the ethereal nature of the apparitions through fluid, elongated forms and a stark contrast between the heavy, earthly bedchamber and the luminous, swirling figures above.
The composition is divided into two distinct realms. On the left, the Queen reclines on a daybed, her posture one of weary grace, while an attendant sits nearby, seemingly unaware of the celestial spectacle. The right side of the canvas is dominated by the spirits, rendered in pale, ghostly tones that emerge from the surrounding darkness. Fuseli employs a theatrical lighting scheme, typical of his approach to literary subjects, to focus attention on the Queen's upward-reaching hand. This gesture bridges the gap between the physical world and the visionary experience.
Fuseli's technique here reflects his training and his fascination with the works of Michelangelo, particularly in the muscularity and dramatic poses of the figures. The painting avoids the rigid formality of Neoclassicism, opting instead for a more emotive and imaginative interpretation of the text. The muted colour palette, dominated by deep browns, ochres, and pale flesh tones, serves to heighten the sense of mystery and melancholy inherent in the scene. This work remains a representative example of Fuseli's ability to translate complex literary narratives into visual form, prioritising psychological tension over literal representation.
